Glulam Connections Fire Testing report now available

A new report demonstrates the fire resistance rating of glulam beam to column connections in Type IV construction. The findings support mass timber as a safe solution that meets, and in some cases exceeds, stringent fire safety standards for U.S. building design and construction.

ArupD.R. JohnsonMyTiCon and the Softwood Lumber Board partnered to complete three full-scale fire tests for glulam beam to column connectors. The three different configurations of glulam beam to column connections were fire tested at a U.S. nonprofit, independent research and development organization with approved fire testing facility. The tests were carried out to meet ASTM E119-16a “Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials,” and satisfy requirements of Chapter 7 of the IBC.

PODCAST: The First Timber High-Rise in the U.S.

Thomas Robinson, founder of LEVER Architecture, discusses the firm's Framework building, slated to be the first timber high-rise in the United States.

In this episode, ARCHITECT talks to Robinson about the challenges when construction innovation outpaces codes and the benefits of working in the firm's self-designed CLT office building, Albina Yard.

Lucas Epp of StructureCraft Builders describes the science behind one of the newest mass timber products on the market, and how it could help change the face of timber construction.

Headlines touting the newest timber high-rises have been on the rise in the past decade, as there has been renewed interest in using wood structural systems for mid- and high-rise commercial construction across Europe, Canada, and the United States. This interest in the potential applications has grown, in part, because of innovation in the world of mass timber products, which have reduced weight and increased strength, making them a more viable alternative.
